A lone mermaid pauses on the dock beneath strings of glowing lights, her tail catching reflections from the water below. The scene is quiet and cinematic—a moment of stillness at the end of the evening, when the harbor settles into deep blues and the lights begin to shimmer across the tide.

Part of my ongoing Lowcountry mermaid series, Harbor Lights explores the intersection of fantasy and everyday Southern life. Rather than distant mythical creatures, my mermaids inhabit familiar spaces: docks, marshes, and waterfront gatherings, carrying with them feelings of nostalgia, longing, and belonging.
