Lowcountry Skies

Original Oil Painting by Tatiana Tatum

Finger drawings, handprints, and doodles emerge through a veil of condensation like fragments of memory. In Lowcountry Skies, the fogged window becomes a collaborative surface. Its a place where multiple hands have left their marks, layering playful gestures over one another until they form a visual diary of a shared moment.

Part of my ongoing Foggy Window series, this painting explores condensation as both a record of time and a repository of human presence. The drips running down the glass reveal the slow passage of minutes, while the marks themselves speak to our instinct to draw, write, and leave evidence that we were here.

The title references the wide, humid skies of the South Carolina Lowcountry, where moisture is an ever-present part of life. The saturated blues and cascading drips evoke heavy summer air, afternoon storms, and car windows clouded by heat and humidity. Through the fog, the doodles become constellations of memory suspended against an atmospheric landscape.

The handprint at the top of the composition suggests a child reaching out, while the smiley face and abstract forms hint at conversations, boredom, and spontaneous acts of play. Together, these marks transform an ordinary surface into something deeply personal and unexpectedly poetic.
